Why would someone perform a suicide this way? Is it a tradition or something?

It's done to prevent the samurai from being captured by others, to avoid torture. It is also done as capital punishment to Samurai who have committed bad stuff.

It's called seppuku when using it in an online context, you say Harakiri when you are speaking verbally.

The original tradition involved the person plunging the dagger into his stomach, making a cross horizontal cut, and another would behead him instantly after. This was tradition, and often performed publicly.

The japanese have some weird shit, to be perfectly honest.
