It's not about the software or name, it's mainly the content you/users can supply which will make it a success or not.

Yes I too think that. But I will be confirmed if I see a few people with .info domains having successful forum and few with SMF or any other free software.

vbteam.info - they just found a "niche" and are the best in it
free forum script:
Warez-bb.org - "Powered by phpBB"

As you can see, neither domain, nor forum engine matters, as long as you can provide quality stuff

da-legends.info they was on info domain when they started then top TLD Domains, i think its down right know.

Its all about Your Work on Your Site/Forum... But It takes a little while to get Traffic.
