vpn important question need answering

was thinking of buying a vpn package as i usually download movies on my remote desktop and transfer them over but dont want my isp to see......will the vpn block my isp from seeing that i am transfering files to my computer or will they still see it

cuz i also heard that pptp vpn is unsafe?

as i have already said i download movies on a remote desktop and transfer them to my home computer so my ip isnt recorded on for example rapidshare and im not completely throttiling my home traffic

i am in the uk and a digital economy bill is being passed so that is why i want to protect my identity
