DVD Piracy: Father And Two Sons Are Jailed

A father and two sons who used dozens of Chinese "slaves" to pull off Britain's biggest DVD piracy scam have been jailed.

The "sophisticated" operation, which made up to ?7m, hid behind a "veneer of respectability" as it imported cutting edge equipment from the Far East.
The group provided a "one-stop-shop" service for major blockbuster movies and unregulated pornographic films.
When police raided a number of locations in East London in 2006, they found thousands of pirate DVDs of the latest movie releases - including Ice Age 2, The Da Vinci Code and Iron Man - and the equipment to make them.
It was the first time such an operation had been identified in Western Europe.
They also found ?130,000 in cash and a number of Chinese immigrants working in the factory, as a vulnerable slave labour force.
The gang was discovered when HM Customs officials intercepted a parcel at Stansted Airport which contained master copies used for film reproduction
They traced the discs to a warehouse in Walthamstow, East London - a factory that produced hundreds of thousands of high-quality pirate DVDs every week.
Sami Asghar-Sheikh, who is 28, his brother Rafi Asghar-Sheikh, 26, and their father Khalid Asghar-Sheikh, 53, used a legitimate business front to create a massive piracy industry with a global reach and one that was having a significant impact on the major movie houses.
The brothers, of Larkshall Road, North Chingford, Essex, were convicted of conspiracy to contravene copyright laws, contravene the trademark legislation and acquire criminal property between March 2003 and June 2006 when they were arrested in co-ordinated police raids.
Their father, who lived with them, was found guilty of the copyright plot and sentenced to four years in jail. His sons were sentenced to six years each.
Also before Southwark Crown Court was Xin Li, 34, of Victoria Road, Walthamstow, who was convicted of concealing criminal property.
He was jailed for two years and three months
