Broad Dedicated Server Help?

I've lurked this website for quite some time and read a lot of interesting posts. Anyway, I'm finally ready to purchase a dedicated server and I've got a lot of questions, I apologize if similar questions have been asked before I'm just trying to figure out what is best currently. I greatly appreciate anyone willing to give me their two cents.

Here is what I'd like to use the dedicated server for.
- Hosting two websites (Really won't use much of the servers resources)
- My own VPN for private browsing
- IRC Server
- Ventrilo Server
- Running 6-8 Processes of the same game (It's a lightweight game but with 6-8 running it should use a bit of RAM)

From what I've read to run 4-6 Instances of the game I'd need 4GBs of RAM, so I'm expecting to need 6-8 GBs of RAM.

Anyway, the questions I have:
- What OS should I be using?
- Is there anything else that will be necessary to install? (PuTTY, etc)
- How would I go about having a GUI so I can launch the processes for the Game?
- If you have any other comments feel free?

I know most of the questions are probably common knowledge but I'm a bit new to this all, I'm not expecting to have it setup flawlessly, I'll spend time researching what everyone says and learning about it before I continue.

Hello and Welcome to KWWH,

I Think you will have to purchase 1 dedicated server with multi IPs lets say (5) for each service you want.

1 - installing websites is very very easy, I'de prefer to use nginx with php-fpm and mysql server. no need for ftp server since you will be able to SFTP to upload your files.

2- for VPN you will have to use either PPTPd (Old and is kinda unsecured) or OpenVPN (new and very secured) but requires third-party client software so I find it a bit annoying.

3- any IRC server can be installed, you have to ask your provider if they will allow IRC to be installed on their network.

4. Ventrilo server is not a problem either from looking at their setup page I don't think you will find any problem in setting it up.

5. as for game, you mentioned you will need to access GUI its possible on linux but I don't know if that game support linux operating system. anyway if it not then you will have to go with Windows OS. and using Remote Desktop connection to setup all servers mentioned above and running game instances .

so the answer to your questions :

1- OS : I prefer Linux and if your game don't support that then Windows will do just fine.

2- Extra Software will depends on your server OS, for linux you will need Putty to connect to SSH, for Windows you will RDP (already built-in in windows), and extra FTP program if you need, etc...

3. usign Windows OS, or installing VNC on Linux OS.

4. N/A
