From my experience i recommend you to use freehostia.I have hosted many sites there before for free. It comes with free db for your wordpress. For domain name you could apply free **** domain.Just use google for all the links.

Unless you want paid services, there is nothing wrong to go with major web hosting service. If you in tight budget you might need to do more research.
