Personally I think if this had happened four or at least three years ago it could have had a chance but it's too late now. Both should have clearly seen this coming with the success of the first iPhone but tried it on their own, failed and then decided to join forces. I don't personally see Microsoft ever being successful due to the way their company works. The company has too many middle management and bureaucracy. Nothing happens fast and in the mobile world you need to move fast. You need to push out updates quickly.

Take Apple. They quickly released an update to the iOS 5 when complaints of battery usage popped up. OK it may not have solved the problem 100% but they reacted quickly to fix the problem and keep people happy and everyone knows an iOS 6 is probably being worked on now. Google are even more well known for releasing updates. Windows on the other had are slow which will just irate people but it's not developers fault. It's the way the company is structured.
