[Help] .htaccess password

hi guys, how to create a .htaccess password?

i want to put a password on my public_html folder using .htaccess, and also i dont want to put a password the folder inside the public_html like

public_html/foldername/ -- i want to access this without a password.. but
when someone access my public_html it has password..

ex: someone access my site mydomain.com - it has a password but
someone access my domain.com/foldername/ - no password

hope someone can help me...
