Default Feds Now Plans To Close 1,200 Data Centers

The U.S. government now expects to shutter at least 1,200 data centers by the end of 2015 in its data center consolidation project. That's about 40 percent of the IT facilities identified in the latest update from federal CIO Steven VanRoekel. The number of government data centers has grown steadily ? jumping from 1,100 to 2,094 and now to 3,133 ? as the Obama administration has identified more facilities than expected, and expanded the initiative to target telecom closets. The CIO's office says it is on track to close 525 facilities by the end of this year, and has published a list of data centers targeted for closure.

Why are they closing? Because of piracy stuff or out of business (assuming those DC's are funded by the gov)?

This is stupid. They are all Government data centers like for the Department of Agriculture or the Department of Finance or the Department of Commerce. It makes perfect sense for the Government to close 90% of them and combine them together. Have super data centers like what Google, Amazon, Apple etc do as it's way cheaper and more secure.

Take this as an example. If you have 1000 data centers and each has two security guards that's 2000 people employed but if you've only 10 super Data Centers you could have 10 guards on duty (that's 5 times more security) and your still only needing to employ 100 people instead of 2000.

That's only security. Their's also maintanence, upgrading, servicing, even additional stuff like landscaping the grounds around the data center.

The cost savings combining these data centers is massive and all this has nothing to do with piracy. It's a perfectly sensible cost saving measure.

This whole topic is misleading as Sandvik did his usual stuff of copying and pasting it without clarifying to all KWWHunction warez users that these are government data centers and nothing related to the file host issues like Megaupload of late.

    First sentence:

The U.S. government is continuing its aggressive effort to consolidate its data centers, and has again increased its target for the number of facilities it expects to close, according to Federal Chief Information Officer Steven VanRoekel.

But yeah, most probably just look at the title.
