There isn't really such a thing as a Linux OS, they are called distributions.

It doesn't matter too much which one you choose, its more a matter of preference. The speed and security you achieve is all based on how you decide to set it up.

I know most people here will probably push centos as one of the best distributions, but I'm a strong advocate of Ubuntu. Mainly because you're unlikely to end up in rpm hell. All my webservers run Ubuntu, from the base server install (no gnome) with just the ubuntu server and ssh server packages, and then either LAMP, LEMP or a mix of the two. They all run very well.

My main choice for linux is Debian, but i usually get stuck with centos due to whm/cpanel requirements.

If people could be happy with just getting everything done manually i would be happy with ssh & debian.

Depends on what distro you play around
All of them are good i guess, personally prefer Debian

I used to prefer CentOS above all since that was what I was accustomed to.
But I started a project where CentOS wasn't a viable option and Debian was required. Although that project is now defunct, I have since moved over to Debian because I have a better understanding of it now and most of the packages I use are all readily available without importing extra repos.
