XP & 7 are the best IMO.

BUT. As for stability 7 > XP.

And yea, about upcoming Win8.. all this metro UI, for sysadmin it is useless and stupid.

I am currently on Windows 7 and happy with it. Will try out Windows 8.
The development looks good so far.

    Kind Regards,
    Fish.

    So, there's only Microsoft?

    What about Linux? Macintosh?

I would have been asking the same question only if the Title didn't say "windows"

I just installed the win 8 enterprise edition and i think it's pretty good. Especially the integration of a PDF reader, messaging and email.

Windows 7 has maintained a very stable foundation depending on your computer specifications. You can't expect it to operate at its peak on a mini notebook with 1 GB of RAM. If you are looking for a "lite" OS then Windows XP is for you, but if you have at least 2-4 GB in RAM, Windows 7 is probably your best friend.
