What is ASN?

Few hours ago, I had a chat with a big hosting provider. While chatting he asked me what is your ASN?
Now I wonder, what actually it is? I only know that ASN means AS Number. But I don't know what it really is? or why should I have this?

Can anyone here tell me about this?

I don't think so. I think its related to having own IP or a number that I can use or something.
Moreover no one asking ASN. They ask ASL = Age Sex Location.
