Alexa rank increases by the number of users that visit your site that have the Alexa toolbar installed. It's a terrible measurement of a site's popularity, and should never be taken seriously. Faking Alexa popularity is relatively easy. http://www.alexa.com/toolbar

Their method is relatively simple. They study a few sites. Let's say www.site.com for example. At www.site.com, 10% of their visitors have the Alexa toolbar installed. They believe this percentage stays true for all sites, so a site that has 500 users visit it with the Alexa toolbar has 5,000 visitors in a day.

It's a logical, but impractical solutions for guessing a site's popularity.

PageRank is a unique, but mostly useless algorithm of Google's.

PageRank defines how much Google values that site's/page's content & links. Sites with higher PageRank supposedly place better, but it's not always true because Google places relevancy above anything else.

However, outbound links from high PR sites to lower PR sites bring the PR of that site up a bit.

The only instances when PR really helps you, is when a highly competitive keyword is found on multiple sites. The site with the highest PR will usually get the highest rank.

This is just my opinion, though, but PR and Alexa rank are useless. If people spent more time making their content better, more accessible, and more feature rich, they'd rank better, instead of wasting their time to get a PageRank.

Besides, hoping for a high PR on a new site is like hoping for a Masters degree after going to college for a semester. Google puts a site's age into great consideration.
