Webthosting scammed me $150
Let me tell you a story of how Webthosting scammed me out of $150.
The whole chain of events including screenshots can be found at http://www.besthostingforums.com/showthread.php?t=20258
Dec 22 - Bought 1month 100Mbit UNMETERED VPS from webthosting. They claim "Unconditional Hassle-free 30-day Money-back guarantee". What's the harm I said to myself.
Received the account details within a few hours. Support was really bad and unhelpful. Ended up paying an additional $5 for Kloxo which I didn't need, and had to reformat the server to get it back to Ubuntu.
Speeds are constantly between 500KB/sec - 1500 KB/sec. Clearly not anywhere near 100Mbit.
Dec 23 - Speeds picked up to 4000KB/sec for a couple of hours, then dropped back down.
Dec 23-26 - Speeds around 2000-3000B/sec at times, and 1500KB/sec at other. Was told by Bentink that if I wanted faster speeds, I needed to upgrade my account to a higher tarrif. At the same time, he offered me a great discount if I upgraded and added some additional month. That was my falling point. I thought - well now I'm getting 1500KB/sec (not even close to 100Mbit), maybe if I pay more I'll get better service. WRONG!
Dec 27 - Paid $133 for an additional 7 months + upgraded to a higher-end service. Speeds IMMEDIATELY plummeted to below 1500KB/sec constantly.
All of a sudden Bentink starts saying that speeds do not depend on the type of service, and that it is only dependant on userload.
I say, fine. You lied to me. I want a refund under your "unconditional hassle-free 30-day money back guarantee". Guess what. No can do. Since I upgraded, this was my second invoice. Under a hidden clause in their TOC, you can only get a refund for the 1st invoice (with a deduction of $15). Not exactly unconditional and not exactly hassle-free.
Bentink just says that "Unconditional" means that it needs to abide by all the clauses in their TOC.
Dec 28 - Speeds dropped to 15 - 200KB/sec constant rate. If I wanted these speeds I would have used my own home internet connection.
Bentink now starts calling me a lier and says these speeds are not true. He says I should be getting 10-11MB/sec.
Later that day he changes his view and says I should not even expect to get anything near 4-5MB/sec since "You get what you paid for"
A few hours later he tells me that the server is just overloaded since people are using all the bandwidth. So everything is ok, I must just wait for everyone else to stop using their servers and then maybe I'll be ok.
Dec 29 - Speeds still terrible. Now he says, you know what I'll just start capping everyone. 1MB/sec is great speed for what you're paying! What do you want from me? He also adds that 500KB/sec is considered good speed for webhosting, so I should be happy.
So now, everyone bought 100Mbit, but is now capped to 10 Mbit
End of the day - speeds are at 50KB/sec
Dec 30 - Bentink now starts saying that I broke TOC and I should be lucky he's not canceling my account. His interpretation of breaking the TOC is that I requested a refund on a 2nd invoice. Nice.
As for speeds. They went down to 10-20KB/sec.
Now all of a sudden Bentink says: Well you know, we didn't bother to protect this VPS from DOS attacks. Maybe you're having an attack. Lemme check that.
After a few hours, speeds finally go up to 820KB/sec. woohoo.
So, after 3 days, speeds finally picked up to max 3MB/sec for a few hours. That's clearly nowhere near 100Mbit, but better than nothing. After a few hours, speeds went back down to 500KB/sec
Jan 1 - Server completely down for 11 hours. No answer from support ticket.
After 11 hours. Server back online. Speeds picked up a bit, but guess what. No longer unmetered. Now it's capped at 2TB/month. It's quite a large cap, but still - I bought unmetered so wtf?
Jan 2 - Back to dialup speeds - 10-20KB/sec
Jan 4 - Speeds back now ok - however still have 2TB capped on a supposedly unmetered package.
VPS of course down again for another 5 hours.
Server back online after 5 hours. Speeds back down to less than 150KB/sec
Jan 5 - Bentink removed the 2TB cap. Now I have unmetered, but the line is CAPPED at 10Mbit. Support ticket says to me that I will never get a download speed higher than 1MB/sec. They also threaten again to delete my account if I don't stop complaining about their crappy services.
They say I need to choose: 1MB/sec unmetered vs 5MB/sec metered. This is not what I signed up for.
Also, today they change their "Unconditional Hassle-Free 30-day Money-back guarantee" to "30-day Money Back Guarantee". Admition of guilt anyone?
He also says that anyone who expects to get 100Mbit from his 100Mbit line is obviously a noob, and that I should know that I will never get anything higher than 5MB/sec at offpeak times.
Straight after getting the threats, server goes down again for a few hours.
My understanding from their threats is that they deleted my account.
I decide that I've had enough and so I file a dispute with Paypal. Obviously the dispute gets rejected because it's an intangible.
So, that's a nice $150 well spent.
All I can say is to stay away from WebThosting. They are very unfriendly and will do anything to keep your money even though they offer a "money back guarantee"woja Reviewed by woja on .
