If you can't change the user rep system then use the Ranks system that's already there by default as you can do what you want to do with that.

If you don't know how to do it through the ranks system then let me know and I'll give you a hand.

Create multiple usergroups and use promotions.

do you mean this??? admincp>User Ranks>User Rank Manager you can add image directorys and set it to a certain usergroup
