Hide categories and merge threads

Hi all.

I've got the latest phpBB version running on a site. I've been thinking about how to do to things, but haven't figured it out yet:

1) I want to give the users the option of disabling some categories in the forum through their usercp. There is some content that could be considered NSFW, and I want to give the users the option of simply disabling it and making it invisible for themselves.

2) I sometimes need to merge 2 threads together if they're similar. Now, the thing is that when you do it through the moderator control panel, you need to manually browse the forum and find the target thread. Is there any way to enter a target URL instead of manually looking for the topic?

Any help with these would be greatly appreciated

Umm... I guess either noone want to help, or noone knows how to do this
