This is 100% harmless and a very good idea indeed.

This would come in handy in a lot of situations. If the thread starter wanted his post trashed, he could report it to staff and they could do that. Say he was offering something and wanted to take a break, he could close it and open it x time later without annoying staff to dig up his old thread to unlock it so he can bump it.
