Lets say someone designed and coded skin for IPB 2.3.x version, porting would be to convert same skin to work on IPB 3.1. So it's just re-coding, hope you understand it now.

Porting ( i think ) is when say you have a wordpress theme and wanting it to work with say phpbb3 or something else.

It can mean re-coding for a different version or just converting to different forum

aaahh i see.....is it generally hard to do or is it just practise is needed

You need to have basic html and css knownledge (other languages can be included also).

Also needed is the forum variables knowledge if you are changing forum or even upgrading say from ipb 2.3 to 3.1. Totally different way of displaying data and retrieving data.

Suppose you have a vBulletin 3.8.x forum. The skin is really cool and you are planning to upgrade your site to vBulletin 4.x the skin will not work. So in this case, you need to port the skin
