I doubt that your cpanel ID will be your shell access ID, but by default the login ID is root.
Yes you are correct. The password doesn't show up due to security reasons.
Do one thing, copy your password and right click on the putty terminal window (during password entering time). It'll be pasted then.
Try it and tell.
Ohh btw, your cPanel & SSH passwords aren't same if you haven't set them as same.
