Try about 1000 or 1200. A good coder can adapt but please try and design it so it's scalable. Giving the buyer or coder the options of having it fixed of fluid needs to be considered from the start by the GFX artist.

i always make my skin 940 pixels i dunno why...but i think it fit 1024 x 768 screen which 90% of world pc users have

well u an do it 1000 which is good

I duno coding but i always do designs at 940 x 2000 px
The height is always lengthy for me coz of patterns in background
