I know you said you want to use vb, but I would look towards ipb or phpbb.

From what the majority thinks and what I have seen most will agree vb3 is better then vb4. Now with that said vb3 is coming to an end and will no longer be supported. There are tons of exploits for vb in general and with the support dropped I can't really see vb lasting much longer. SO if your starting out I would move away from vb. If you already have vb database vb3 is better then 4.

vB3... more precisely, vB 3.8.5, IMO
    vB4 sucks

well from what i've gathered from other posts, i trust your judgement.

let's go with recommended versions of IPB, or if there are any other stable BBS scripts that i should look at (mybb, or something)

I recommend the latest version of IPB (3.1.2)
Clean, secure and much better looking than vB or phpBB.

You should just try them both and select the one you like best.

    Wrong.
    vB4 is riding the failwhale.
Life asked Death: "Why do people love me, but hate you?"
Death responded: "Because you're a beautiful lie and I'm the painful truth."

The latest version 3.1.2 is very secure and is what I am testing right now. Works and looks good.
