Great question. this is going to create a lot of replies.... here comes a long one

First IPB is far better. Anyone who disagrees just need's more experience and knowledge. I think of them as a noob

When originally released vb4 was a disaster. It was full of bugs and pretty much wanna be IPB3. It's improved a lot as they have fixed a lot of bugs. Just as one example their were 12 bug fixes in an IPB upgrade compared to the average 200 in vb. When vb released for some strange reason they only released beta to certain people before gold went global or something like that. can't remember but it wasn't like a regular release sequence.

vb is a resource hog. The search on vb4 is a disaster. I know this from having to recode CyberWarez search after they upgraded to vb4 and it destroyed their server. Most members here run vb on a much smaller scale. If their sites were bigger they'd notice a huge difference. The template system on vb4 is also terrible as is their plugin system. eg on ipb you can turn almost anything into a plugin point which means you can make pretty much a plugin for everything without every having to do a template edit. vb4 still relies on set pugin insertion points which meant you limited on what you can design in terms of pugins. These are just a few of the things that spring to mind but their are hundreds of more little things like this. If your starting from scratch go with IPB3. If your considering upgrading vb4 has pretty much covered most of it's bugs and now is a safe time to upgrade.

I like vB 3.8, but 4.0 has a-lot of good mods to it, and to me it looks a bit better... I guess I will need to do a-lot of coding if I go with 4.0, but the poll is pretty close...

I haven't used VB for about a year, so coming back on vb4 was a real change, but I have to say, if you plan on building a community, and not just "another warez forum", and IPB is not for you, VB4 is your answer, mainly because the profile pages are a lot better.

VB 3.8 reliable and skins are avaible easily with good stability.

VB4 sucks big time, resource hungry and not much mods are available.

I've used vB 3.8 extensively and tried out IPB3 too. Never wanted to give vB 4 a chance. Just didn't think it was worth my time.

I now have to go with vBulletin 3.8 because vBulletin 4.0 is giving me lots of problems, and yes my site will be a warez site.
