How does usenet work?

So i have always wondered how usenet works?

In some pre release databases i have seen download links which redirect to usenet.

I know that we have to pay for a monthly subscription, but how does their system work? is it like a p2p network?

and please dont tell me to google or check wikipedia.

Another thing is that, if usenet does have releases, then are these releases fast enough? i.e the pre times.

I dont think that wikipedia will tell me the pre release times of games in usenet and how to download copyrighted material through it .

my advice is to try it.. there are times on Usenet after downloading the packages you need to rebuild part of it with 3rd party apps.. look at the links people have posted here and try it instead of relying on others

Well if the pre times are really better than or equal to good torrent trackers like TL and SCC then i guess its a good way of getting releases first
