how do i know i get a dedi and not a vps?

You can try to test this :

cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep siblings

If you get anything as output like ->

siblings        : 4
siblings        : 4
siblings        : 4
siblings        : 4

You have got a dedicated server. But if you don't get any output you have a VPS.
