If you want at least minimal compensation just for your time in helping define the project than do as Jayyzz said and get a deposit up front,

Chatting sucks because all you do is go back and forth saying the same things over trying to get a clear picture. PM & Email with detailed descriptions and images is the only way anyone should do projects. Stops last minute changes and gives each person time to read the information and think about it. On chat it is hurry or you look like you don't know what you are doing.
