Well, I'd use Akismet as a spam protection service rather relying on reCAPTCHA. It's been cracked recently but Akismet is still going strong. It's blocked 405 spam comments on my blog and you can use the Akismet mod for your forum too.

I too faced the same problem but finally got rid of those bots by the following mod.

And ya bots bypass the recaptcha but this mod saved me. Just take a look at this





Also add the redirector mod that will redirect external links through external.php with a rel=nofollow so that the spammers cant get the link juice.

You have many add-on for stop boot on VB.
For me best one is vMail - Verify Mail before registration.
