Default iDOS returns to the App Store, upload and run your own programs without jailbreaking

iDOS is back in the App Store after having been removed for violation of Apple's terms of sale. The DOS emulator, which is based on the open-source DOSBox, was able to run .EXE files, something that allowed iDOS users to fire up applications like the DOS-based Windows 95, extending the program beyond what was allowed by Apple.

Now iDOS returns for free, having been chewed up by Apple, and lacking the somewhat crucial feature of iTunes File Sharing. In its current 2.0.1 guise, iDOS includes six pre-loaded games (Wolfenstein 3D, Duke I & II, Major Striker, SuperNova, and Kingdom of Kroz II), but you can't upload any other DOS programs to it using iTunes. This Apple-enforced inhibition has essentially made iDOS look all but useless from the outside, unless all you want to do is run Duke Nukem. But luckily, it doesn't stop there.

Not to be stopped by Apple's iron fist, enterprising users like BoxOfSnoo from the Touch Arcade forum, have shown that it's possible to use a tool like the free iPhone Explorer [PC | Mac] to upload any DOS compatible program you might desire into iDOS, without jailbreaking your iPhone or iPad. Simply download iPhone Explorer, connect your iDevice via USB, browse to the Apps folder, find iDOS, and copy your program into the 'Documents' folder. From there you can fire up iDOS and run the program.

Who knows how long iDOS will stay on the App Store once this gets out, or whether Apple will actually do anything about it this time around -- but one thing's for sure, if you have any interest in DOS emulation on your iPhone or iPad, you should act swiftly just in case.
