i have tried another leadlenney Reviewed by lenney on . external hard drive help ok so i have a 500gb buffalo external hard drive today i used the wrong plug on it :( so now it smells burnt out is there anyway to recover my files? my pc does not reconise it as when pluging in no power goes to it i tried to open it to just put inside my tower but the connections on it are different what can i do??? Wow... Yes I would break it open and use it as an internal... or open it, take the HDD out and buy an external case, hopefully you can use it... Good luck

rapidgen.netyou most likely burned out a component in the electronic part of the external drive, wouldn't say the hd itself burned out...first step would be to ask are you under guarantee, if so go to shop get replaced, but you'll need the hd inside so ask can they take that out for you and put in new external (obviously if it wasn't the hd which burnt out). otherwise, just take out the hd, get a external sata+ide or ide only connector (you can get ones that don't give a drive with them = cheap), connect your hd from the burnt-out external, and get your files off it. or just buy a new empty external case and put this ide into it (i asume the hd is ide, as most pc's these days (towers) are all sata.

I think all electronics device contains inbuilt fuse.So if possible change the fuse.
Also your data is fine.Because all electronics device have voltage protection.So it hasn't damaged the disk.
