Firstly I must say learn to search the forum before you create a thread. There are already many posts upon this discussion and many people have also replied with the image scripts available around.

Coming to the thread, chevereto according to me is the best and chevereto 2.0 which will be released soon is a licensed one costing $30 i guess and that would be the best one around.

Cory has already mentioned the link to it. Depending on the traffic choose a VPS or a Dedicated server.

How do people afford the cost of being an Image Host? Lifetalk, for example, gets insane traffic!

I agree, its not much of a profit in image hosting

Its all run out of pocket. If you get a vps it better be powerful. Most people will direct link. That just uses server resources and nothing can be made off it.
