Well the way how "traditional DDLs" as you put it operate is that, you add a link to the DDL on all pages you would like to submit to them, and then you submit the download pages' urls as well as the download titles.

The rules differ from DDL to DDL but they generally have the same concept, submit clean titles and unique links in your posts and you'll be accepted.

For example:
You would go here: http://zunox.com/submit.php
and you would start by entering 10 downloads that you have on your site, filling in the appropriate details.

Then when the download queue on Zunox is accepted, your downloads will appear on our main page. People searching for those downloads will then be sent to your pages via an iframe and they grab the direct links from your pages. Sometimes if the downloader likes the layout/design etc of your site, they will bookmark and come back later.

That's how traditional DDLs work.
