Whats wrong here? The footer wont show up after the decode of

Well, yes it is decoded indeed but check whether in functions.php or index.php, you will find some code which is used to check whether the footer is intact. If you find it simply delete it completely (code used to check) and edit the footer happily

NOTE: Commonly this is too remove 'Copyright' or add your own, you should leave the original copyright.

Dont forget to check functions.php, as most have same links also there so if you edit those links in footer, template will break.

Copyright is what I wanted to remove. The annoying links were what I wanted gone. Thanks for the help though.

As I already said, you should actually check functions.php where there will be a function which will check if the footer is intact or not. Remove the function which does that as you will understand with a look on it and then you can easily remove those annoying copyright links from the footer

Most of the people encode the ending tags and that irritates the people who try to remove the copyright links.
