Hi guys, today Im going to teach you how to add support for IPv6 to your existing site without moving hosts using one of my services. If you just

What is an IP (v4) address?
An IP address is a unique ID given to every device that is connected to the Internet. This means computers, routers, phones, etc. An example of a current (referred to as IPv4) address is 84.18.207.4. IP (v4) addresses are running out, the majority of them have been assigned and it is getting harder for web hosting companies to get new ones.

What is an IP (v6) address?
IPv6 addresses are the new addressing scheme, this scheme has been made to add more IPs to the global pool. Rather than being 32bit addresses, as with IPv4 (with 4,294,967,296 unique addresses), IPv6 addresses are 128bit creating many more addresses. The new system will generate trillions of trillions of addresses,
340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,45 6 to be exact! More than enough eh

Users never get prompted or asked to view a site in IPv6 mode, if they support it the data will be transferred in IPv6 format, else it will fallback to IPv4.

Advantages of IPv6

  • Support for the new protocol means you are ready for the switch over
  • Able to be crawled by Google's IPv6 crawler as well as their IPv4. This may result in more crawling
  • Located in multiple countries [v4: Your server location, or IPv4 reverse proxy location, v6: v6 reverse proxy location -- Sweden] could result in geolocalisation benefits at google [SEO]. (Untested, but sound in theory)
  • Support for IPv6 jumbo packets (Jumbograms) which can greatly improve transfer speeds over large distances (oceans and continents)!
  • Less spam and bots crawl on IPv6.
  • Security Features: to ensure confidentiality and packet's integrity encryption and authentication options are included in IPv6
  • Better header format: the header of IPv6 has been designed in a way to speed-up the routing process.

How can I add IPv6 to my site?

Method 1 - Get a host which support IPv6.
(Alternative)
There are hosts out there (most likely big hosts) that are begining to add support for IPv6 to their networks. However it is unlikely that they will want to host any borderline sites, like the kind found at KWWHunction. However that said this still may be an option for you.

Method 2 - Use a reverse proxy
A reverse proxy service allocates you an IPv6 address, and receives all your IPv6 requests on that IP. It then performs those requests over IPv4 to your server, receives the result and sends to the client over IPv6 on your behalf.

Advantages of a reverse Proxy

  • Server Location and hence your identity hidden
  • Protection against targeted DDOS
  • performance can be improved
  • server load improved as we handle all connection aspects like keep alive
  • lower bandwidth usage if caching is enabled.

Reverse Proxy pricing:
It costs nothing per month (per IP), you pay only for the bandwidth you use (8c/GB) ! This means if no-one uses the IPv6 version of your site you don't pay a cent. So give us a try: KWWHunction thread (Site)
