Nintendo Europe shuts down some sites due to phishing threat

Yet another cyber attack threat has caused even more game web sites to shut down. This time the attack's victim is part of Nintendo's European division. VG247.com reports that the company's Club Nintendo customer rewards web site and other sites operated by the company have been shut down "until further notice" while the company investigates whether or not the sites was the victim of a possible phishing attack.

According to the story, Nintendo has reassured the web site's users that no financial info is in danger of being exposed due to this possible attack, saying, "we would like to reassure you that we do not hold our customer?s bank, credit card or address details on the European Nintendo website and so this data is not at risk." It added that it apologizes for the "inconvenience this has caused".

This is of course just the latest report of cyber attacks that have affected several gaming web sites. Sony's month long shut down of its Playstation Network is the most extreme example but over the past couple of months we have see attacks on the web sites of Square Enix, Codemasters and most recently Epic Games. Indeed Codemaster's web site has basically been replaced by its Facebook page due to an attack that was revealed on Friday. A week ago Nintendo of America reported that its online servers came under attack several weeks ago but that no personal info was taken as a result. The hacking group LulzSec took responsibility for that attack.
