The file-sharing scene is witnessing these days as one of its most important names becomes target in another infringement case. BitTorrent Inc., the name behind probably the most appreciated p2p clients around, uTorrent and the BitTorrent Mainline, have been sued by San Francisco-based company Tranz-Send Broadcasting Network (which has also sued Kontiki Inc. on the same grounds we refer to below).

This time, however, the case is a bit different from what we usually get when copyright infringement and file-sharing are put in the same sentence. According to the complaint filed by Tranz-Send Broadcasting Network, BitTorrent is infringing on a patent originally filed in April 1999 and titled ?Media file distribution with adaptive transmission protocols?.

Reportedly, the patent was granted in November 2007 and explains the hows of a file-sharing system that includes a file database, a transfer client and a distribution server.
Of course, Tranz-Send Broadcasting Network is seeking considerable damage compensation saying that:

?By making, operating, using and/or selling [uTorrent and BitTorrent Mainline] and or other software, BitTorrent has infringed and continues to infringe, contribute to the infringement, or induce the infringement of at least claim 1 of the ?944 patent.?

The filesharing community will hold its breath while the District Court Judge assesses the validity of the patent infringement claim.
