vaporhostn.comFor a webhost site you guys fail at starting a file host site...
It depends will it be personal for you and friends as in just a couple downloads a day... Or for public to use...
Because it doesnt matter if you have the greatest server in the world... What does matter is your backbone backups... Because the more downloads the more connections the network has to handle...
So you cant get a dedi and expect it to handle 1000 connections depending on the datacenter.... You need multiple datacenters.. Cogents and such...
Also the next factors would be ram and hdd's only because from the constant start of downloads your ram will die fast from overuse then the hdd's will die since they all have limited read and write... The more its used the slower it will get then die...
I guess you could say a fast and strong pc would be needed but its the network and hdd which count the most...
So starting id say 5000$ in the long run 10000$ and more a month...

vaporhostn.comAlso forgot to add you will not make anything you will lose in the beginning but once you show your speeds are good then people will want to upload more which in turn you will then need to set download limits to stop so many connections all at once... Then from their you add premium so you can provide non limited services... The less bigger the files are the better your connect will be...
Also ONE hdd is not good you would need a multiple raid setup so just in case one hdd dies you will have more... larger drives will die faster like a tb drive will last 1 month depending on downloads and speed will become turtle speed fast... But multiple hdd will have more of a relaxed load on each so speeds and longer life will be better...

You need at least 10 servers with 1 Gbps ports to start something like that and you will need min 10.000 dollars to advertise your service, because marketing is that what selling product/service.
Selling cheap domains - 5 dollars each - Payment with PayPal only

PasteBot.appspot.comYou'll have to operate in loss in the beginning, since there will be no returns.
Instead you'll be giving out be payouts.
Remember that, people who own/operate filehosts are probably Computer Engineers.
If they are not then, they probably have enough money to Hire some Engineers.
If you are not a Computer Engineer, or Rich, then you shouldn't even consider starting a filehost.

Would probably be a good idea to find some reliable business partners as well. Running a file hosting site your self can be a handful. Especially if your serious about it.
