SMF = Best and fastest Forum, great support on forums, very easy mod install just click button, but very little mods.

PHPBB = Ok support, forum loads decent speed, alot of mods. Get PHPBB-SEO mod, seo included for you.

MyBB = No experience.

It really depends on how much time do you have to work on the forum configuration. While many people say that open source forum scripts are good, they're not so good if you're a beginner.

They have many things that you don't need, page titles aren't like you want them to be. And they're bit hard to change for example in phpBB. Your best bet would be to try each of them on localhost (on your PC) before going live. Just to prevent problems such as; you've set everything up but you don't like some feature that script has.

I'd suggest you to try the vBulletin 3 out, it's a great forum script. It's noob friendly, you can easily make anything out of it. But there's a small catch, it's not free. You can see the pricing details here.

You can easily find nulled (illegal version of the script without a license, means that all linkbacks to vBulletin are removed.) release, but you're risking of getting sued by Internet Brands (company that now owns vBulletin) if you're forum gets big. But, in most cases forum doesn't get so popular to get sued over 295$ (vBulletin price).
