Okay, this probably isn't the most important tutorial and there's probably other ways of doing this however, if you didn't already know... In Photoshop when you open a GIF file it doesn't allow you to add extra layers, nor does it let use brushes etc.

This becomes anoying, but I found a very simple way to fix this:

1. Get you're GIF image you want to edit, i'll use the vBulletin statusicon for example.


2. Now you want to select the "Rectangular Marquee Tool" in photoshop, click and drag it across the whole image like seen below.


3. Press Ctrl + N and create a new transparent image with the same dimensions has the GIF image. Go back to the GIF and drag it over to the new canvas you've just created by using the "Move Tool" which can be selected by pressing the "V" key.


4. You now have the same image, however now you can add new layers, use different colors, add text, brushes etc.

I know this is really basic however when you're trying to find new icons for your forum it can really come in handy.
